Phoronix: NVIDIA Posts Patches For SVM Atomics Support With Open-Source Nouveau

There are a new round of kernel patches posted today by NVIDIA for the open-source, traditionally reverse-engineered "Nouveau" graphics driver: implementing support for SVM atomic memory operations...

Let's be clear, this is to adding support to Mesa in the same way as print("hello world") is building a software project...

Quote: "Patches 6-9 extend Nouveau to use the new mode to allow system wide atomics for OpenCL SVM to be implemented on Nouveau."

...someone else will be implementing any Nouveau changes that actually use this. Can we stop pretending that NVidia will ever help Open Source?

"with NVIDIA providing relevant pieces to Nouveau allows for demonstrating an open-source "client" / user of new code for satisfying upstream requirements"

So they only do this to be able to improve their proprietary driver. Disappointing.

yes. but dont see it so black... this proofs we can force nvidia to do opensource work if they want it or not.
that is good news. and hey be sure now that we know we can force them to do opensource we can in future pressure them even more.
means nvidia will be forces to do more and more opensource.

naughtiness wins!!!!!! this just means we can now start bullying them really hard into this direction to force nvidia to do more and more opensource work.

if we bullying them really hard i am sure Nvidia will stop making closed source drivers at all.

if you forbid novideo loading its infringing shit to kernel, it will quickly switch to working on open driver
