There was nothing holding back the prioprietary driver from implementing SVM and thus supporting OpenCL 2.x . The way Michael writes in this article, it is as if Nvidia just couldn't do it because it wasn't in their power. This is not the case. Nvidia CHOSE not to implement it and it was purely a business decision to promote vendor lock-in for CUDA.

Well Intel is working on pretty big GPGPU products. So NVIDIA will have some competition other than AMD.
