Phoronix: Windows 10 vs. Linux 4.15 + Mesa 17.4-dev Radeon Gaming Performance

As we end out November, here is a fresh look at the current Windows 10 Pro Fall Creator's Update versus Ubuntu 17.10 with the latest Linux 4.15 kernel and Mesa 17.4-dev Radeon graphics driver stack as we see how various games compete under Windows 10 and Linux with these latest AMD drivers on the Radeon RX 580 and RX Vega 64 graphics cards.

Sniff, still fairly far behind, but playable drivers none the less. Question is, is this the fault of the drivers or badly ported games?

Could you redo the EXACT test with a ryzen 1700 stock or something.
I think this may be cpu bound to quite a large extent and if you want like 60 fps gaming the results do not differ that much % wise, still a lot of performance left on the table for sure though.

Read conclusion on the last page, it's probably combination of both, unfortunately even testing nvidia GPU's Windows vs. Distribution wouldn't give clear answer for it, since port optimization might be tested primarily on nvidia, so..., it's still giving some perspective.

Games written for Windows and ported to Linux always will be slower on Linux. Benchmarks results are almost identical, same as OpenGL focused games, so drivers aren't bad.

Third possibility: Neither. DX->OpenGL and DX->Vulkan are translation layers that always add inefficiencies. Windows drivers also probably have profiles for those games, so the Windows driver might not be running in its default state.

In some cases we got the "port of the port". For example, Nixxeus handles the Windows ports of console games from Square Enix, so Feral will do a port from the PC version, not the console version. Also, you have to take in account the time they have to do the port and handle the stability issues. This is the best part of Feral ports, they rarely crash on Radeonsi, at last on my experience. But yeah, the performance could see some improvements.

It would be nice to test Virtual Programing ports too. They may got a lot of deserved flak for the launch of The Witcher 2, but they matured their port software and at last for me W2 is now more close to the Windows version than the average of Feral ports. Some people even say Arma III have identical performance of the Windows version.

When you compare the performance in native games vs. ported games you can surely answer this question yourself.
It's mainly the port that makes the same amount of FPS impossible. However, there is also some room for improvement in some of the native games, especially for lower resolutions.
When it runs well, you see how strong Mesa can be for OpenArena and Xonotic in 4K. But you can also see that without luck and ported games both comes together in Deus Ex: Mankind Divided in 1080p you just get about 60% of the performance that Windows delivers.

I would say that the current state is technically at the same level like the Windows drivers and the main focus for the community should be to convince more game developers to develop games for Linux, especially natively. The drivers will surely improve, but there is a limit and we will more and more see the drivers hitting this limit and the performance steps become smaller.

In American Truck Simulator/Euro Truck Simulator 2, both have native Windows OpenGL and Direct3D support. The Linux version have much better OpenGL performance than the Windows AMD OpenGL drivers, but is still behind a bit from D3D.

Unfortunately right now RadeonSi have a bug on the performance side, showing severe stuttering from time to time.

There seems to be a regression since august.
In DE:MD the 580 was getting 40 fps at 1080p ultra and here it's showing about 32 fps.
