That was somehow expected. Sooner or later someone will merge the remaining functionalities and DC will be settled to die.

    AMD: X1950XTX, HD3870, HD5870
    Intel: GMA45, HD3000 (Core i5 2500K)

Or... hey, here's a crazy thought... we will finish refactoring DC as discussed and it will be accepted upstream.

I can't help but feel a bit sad for AMD. It looks like they really put a lot of work into this DAL. And having only one "platform" to support (DAL) could mean better drivers for everyone. On the other side, I am glad the kernel developers maintain high standards and want as few abstraction as possible, sticking to their policies.
I hope they will find a good middle ground somehow. The kernel interfaces probably need to be enhanced anyway for FreeSync, for example.

Edit: Or, er... well said bridgman

So, will Vega cards work with 4.12 without DC, even if not with FreeSync, but at least on the level of Polaris support that exists now?

Without DC there would be no support for physically connected displays but most compute & server configurations run the dGPUs headless anyways.

For typical desktop (single GPU) use an out-of-tree kernel driver will be required until we can get DC re-factored into an upstream-acceptable state.

Read the listing linked in the article. In short, both Polaris and Vega will be far superior in support to what Polaris 10/11 had when it was brought in. That also includes earlier AMD cards.

It's a culmination of a maturing code base.

So to clarify, no Vega10 display support is expected for 4.12?

Not yet. I have feelings that Vega have much different architercture. At least mesa driver support OpenGL 3.1 only. But you should understand VEGA even not came out.
