    Phoronix: xf86-video-ati 7.9 / xf86-video-amdgpu 1.3 DDX Driver Updates

Michel Dänzer of AMD has announced new releases of their X.Org DDX drivers: xf86-video-ati 7.9 and xf86-video-amdgpu 1.3. The changes in the updates are similar while the xf86-video-amdgpu DDX is paired to work with the AMDGPU DRM kernel driver while the xf86-video-ati driver continues on for the mature Radeon DRM...

You mention "the support for toggling TearFree at runtime via RandR" twice.

That change is present in both drivers.

IIRC it looks at chip ID then depending on what it finds it chooses from mach64, r128 or radeon drivers.

That was before the 7.9.0 release...

... as you can see, it also handles amdgpu now.

Ahh, OK - I did see some references to amdgpu but I didn't see any amdgpu cases in ATIChipID() and missed the drmVersion logic so first thought was that amdgpu support was still WIP. Should have checked the change history.

So is there a advantage over just using the modesetting driver?

bridgman is this wrapper one of the pieces needed for the transition of radeon to amdgpu in distros?

Good question... I hadn't thought about it before but it probably does help, at least for anyone not using the modesetting driver.
