OK. Please try moving the fglrx-core.conf file out of /etc/modprobe.d/... put it somewhere out of the way like your home directory.

          Bah. I hate OS upgrades.

OK, IIRC booting with radeon.blacklist=yes in grub should get you back to whatever driver you were running before (probably VESA I guess).

OK we tried. I'll do a fresh install of 16.04 . I was just wondering if 0-4 fps is normal or if there is something wrong. Thanks for your fast replies anyway. I was expecting to tackle this over a few weeks

0-4 fps is definitely not normal. Not sure whether you should be getting 40 or 100 but I would be expecting something in that range.

Please post back re: how the install goes.

Ok running a fresh install now. WOW the performance increase is huge! It's pretty much always higher than 60fps so it feels silky smooth the whole time. This is 1920x1080 and all the highest candy settings enabled except vsync. tbh I don't really play CS:GO though, I was just using that as an example. I mostly play Ark: Survival Evolved and it runs great on medium. The open source driver is plenty fast enough when it's working :-)
