  • Multimonitor AMDGPU. R9 290x.

    Hi.

    Equipment: Amd fx8350 with 16 gb ddr3, and R9 290x gfx card.

Have been using 14.04.3 with the opensource driver in a multi-monitor environment. Without any problems.
For fun I decided to update to 16.04... well what a bug bummer that was( two different raid controller vendors.) Should've gone for debian testing probably, but now since I've updated already I want to get all things working.

My last and current problem, is now the multi-monitor environment. 1 pb278q, and one mg279q.
First i tried with the Pb connected via DVI and the MG via DP. I get one screen(pb), that's flashing, and the the mg is black with only backlight, or sometimes no signal message.
After some searching I Switched the pb278q from DVI to HDMI. Still only image on the the PB.

Tried using xrandr and setting it manually.

Here is the regular xrandr output:

Thank you for that kind, nonhelpful answer . Unfortunately, I am using software not available for windows unless using VMs. Freesurfer, FSL etc. works better in a Linux environment. So unless you have a more problemsolving oriented answer please accept my thanks and go troll somewhere else.

    Kind regards

agd5f is on vacation so filing a bug ticket might be fastest.

Do both displays work if you plug them in one at a time ?

You mentioned "AMDGPU" - are you running the AMDGPU-PRO stack or using the open source drivers in 16.04 ? If the latter then you would be running radeon rather than amdgpu (same as 14.04.3).

I'm nitpicking about details because it affects which category you file the bug under

Sorry for the late reply, was on holiday. True enough, but I have read some of your previous posts, and you seem to have a slight tendency not to give helpful answers when people with ubuntu are asking. And telling someone to install windows, in a linux forum is not generally considered helpful. But I agree my line about go troll somewhere else was perhaps over the line. But I was a bit stressed and tired, now that I am refreshed after a vacation, I do apologize.

        To Bridgman:

Actually it counts for both drivers, but in this forum its the RadeonSI that i want help for. I am using the Obaifppa. I even tried with my new Rx 480. Same applies. It seems that there is something buggy in my setup, with having two monitors, and one going automatically for 144hz freq., while the other is on 60hz...(59.95). If I set new resolution via xrandr and --rate i can get the second screen going in 1920x1080 as long as i go for 60 Hz. But not the 2560x1440, no matter the refresh rate.
I haven't gone manually editing the xorg.conf file, perhaps i should, but as long as xrandr is unable to get the screen working, i dont see the point.

        Thanks for any help.

        Kind regards
        Brut.

For some reason i cant edit the previous post, but I did try with only the monitor that is troubling me connected, then it did work on it's own.

            Debianxfce:

            Thanks for the swift reply.

Seems that I have been very unclear, so i will specify.
            1. 2 monitors, 1 right side (DP-0), 1 left(HDMI-0).
            2. I have one gfx card. a R9 290X. (Though i also have a RX480 lying around, that i have tested out as well. )
            3. I want to be able to drag windows between the two monitors. Meaning 2 heads. I use randr not xinemara for this.
            4. I do not need Zaphoheads since i use randr to have multiple heads, and not real screens.
            5. Can't get the second monitor up and running when using both monitors, even if I define everything in xorg.conf. Unless i specify the right monitor with a lower resolution than ideal, and use a lower refresh rate than optimal, the monitor is dark/blank. Even if I use zaphohead, and with Zaphohead there is lag on the other monitor.
6.The setup was the same on ubuntu 14.04.3. Then everything worked as it should.
            7. When I searched the internet and ubuntu forums using google, there wasn't anyone that had the same symptoms/problems on amd cards, though there are several with similar problems with nvidia cards, on ubuntu 16.04. But this was fixed with a driver update.
I installed or upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04, but I'm having some problems with my graphics card. The display is blank The display flickers Items on the screen do not display correctly Certain programs

Why I haven't edited the xorg.conf before now? That's simple, I can change the all the settings with xrandr, so why bother since i am having trouble and are testing out different options?

            Kind regards.
            Brut.

This isn't helpful, but I used 3 monitors (all DVI; two hooked up to the GPU's DVI ports, one with DVI-to-HDMI) with a R9 380 with AMDGPU a while back without issue on Ubuntu 16.04.

Just to rule out Ubuntu, one idea might be to boot up LiveCDs of Fedora 24 and openSUSE Tumbleweed (Plasma 5 assuming you're doing Fedora 24 with GNOME already).

Hmm, can we not edit posts now? In any case; wanted to add that on Ubuntu 16.04 I used padoka PPA, but even before adding that repo, my monitors worked fine.

I tried padoka as well, no improvement. But the other distros as livedistros is a good idea. Guess i was to hung up in the installed one to think of that. Thanks.

Seems the problem might be partly related to ubuntu, when running the live cd from ubuntu the problem remains, but in Fedora there is no problem unless i change the refreshrate of the monitor, meaning as long as there is 59 hz, both screens are running at 1440p, but if i change refreshrate, there same screen remains dark.

                    Livefedora is using this version:
                    Extended renderer info (GLX_MESA_query_renderer):
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on AMD HAWAII (DRM 2.43.0, LLVM 3.8.0)

While in Ubuntu it's a newer version.

Any thoughts, except changing to Fedora?

                    Kind Regards
                    Brut.
