Truly, we are fourth class citizens.
There are people saying that GCN 1.1 cards (HD 7790, HD 8770, R7 260/260X, R9 290/290X, R9 295X2) are also working to some extent. Support for GCN 1.0 is coming soon though. That's still only a small portion of all the cards, but that's better than nothing...

OFFICIALLY, unofficially you can try your luck. Seems the driver works on most GCN hardware, but with varying degree. Fortunate that my 390x is working good with this driver, once AMD add in Freesync support I'll be pretty happy.

By that logic, doesn't the fact that you get 2 drivers for those cards make you a 1st class citizen and everyone else 2nd?

Or is your entire post just complete nonsense?

The latter. He needs some cheese with that whine.

How did it go? I also have an r9 280x.

If I uninstall this AMDGPU-PRO driver it falls back to amdgpu, I have radeon driver blacklisted. I believe I had those framebuffer issues also without amdgpu setup correctly beforehand. Also I discovered the pro driver doesn't like Mutter, produces white screen for me (compton is fine).

I'll try that later today (in like an hour actually), then I'll let you know.

Save your time; it's not going to work on a 280x yet.

I just finished installing it as you've sent this message. Sadly, you are right

                    kamil@KAMIL-PC-LINUX:~$ glxinfo | grep OpenGL
libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
                    OpenGL vendor string: VMware, Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.9, 256 bits)
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (3.0 Mesa 11.3.0-devel (padoka PPA))
                    OpenGL extensions:
                    kamil@KAMIL-PC-LINUX:~$ glxinfo | grep renderer
libGL error: unable to load driver: swrast_dri.so
libGL error: failed to load driver: swrast
                    GLX_INTEL_swap_event, GLX_MESA_copy_sub_buffer, GLX_MESA_query_renderer,
OpenGL renderer string: Gallium 0.4 on llvmpipe (LLVM 3.9, 256 bits)
And the XOrg log in case if you're interested. I guess we got to wait for further GPU support...

Test setup: Radeon R9 285, Shadow of Mordor, medium settings, 2560x1440

                      Ubuntu 14.04.4 + fglrx:
                      Average FPS: 21.29
                      Max FPS: 84.26
                      Min FPS: 9.00

                      Ubuntu 16.04 + AMDGPU-Pro:
                      Average FPS: 43.30
                      Max FPS: 99.21
                      Min FPS: 19.96

These new drivers kick ass - with some games at least. Dying Light shows no significant performance improvement and remains completely unplayable at anything beyond 1366x768 with low detail.
