Catalyst 8.3 is doing very well on my Ubuntu/gutsy machine with an ATI Radeon X1800. I experience good 3D performance as well as flawless video playback. No crashes so far.

However, the Java OpenGL pipeline still does not work (again) with this driver. It worked before 8.42.3 and stopped working since then up to now.

Java2D tells me that it could not enable the OpenGL pipeline because the driver does not offer a certain visual. This is interesting since OpenGL itself does work with other applications.

    Is this issue already known?

        x1600 pro AGP 512MB + Gutsy amd64

        Anyone who knows a fix?
        I have the same problem with x1950 pro AGP & FC7 ...
        glxgears works
fgl_glxgears fails with Major opcode ...

I can't tell where exactly lies the problem ( X11 Server & MESA Version don't fit fglrx driver libs )

I wait for an patched rpm or srpm from livna guys....
http://rpm.livna.org ( mabe you can compile this SRPM on Gutsy from ttp://livna-dl.reloumirrors.net/fedora/8/SRPMS/ ) once livna guys create it.

With livna patched fglrx Drivers all works, what the fglrx driver can do...
fgl_glxgears and vlc with opengl works fine

I'm truly surprised with this driver!
For once, I am content with what I have, I don't need anything more.
Compiz(using AIGLX), Video playback using Xv(without tearing, green bars or something like that), and 3D games are working as they are supposed to be!
The only problem I have is that anything 3D or using video (Xv) keeps flickering when I'm using Compiz.. Anyone got a solution for that?

          Thanks!

            TexturedVideo shows some odd lines

            Hi there!

I just installed this release in my Gentoo (Gnome) and it runs perfectly! I was amazingly surprised by the improvement shown by TexturedVideo, however, when enabled, the video shows random horizontal lines, some white, some green. But I know that it will be fixed (hopefully in the next release). If things get the quality shown by this very small feature, I will scream to all my neighbors that Ati is the best thing I've experienced with Linux.

                Black screen with X2300

                Hi,

I was using 8.02 with my Ati Mobility Radeon X2300. Everything seemed to work pretty much ok except for hibernate and some flicker when playing videos.
Now I installed 8.3 and I got nothing but a black screen... Very disappointing

IIRC there is a setting in Catalyst to make it wait for vsync before redrawing something - that of course will slow things down.... hth!

I have a X700 and followed this howto and scrolling is still slow if compiz is running.
Not to mention, videos flicker badly.

Why is everyone saying that these things were fixed?

                    Code:

Well, i also have Mobility Radeon X2300, running Ubuntu Gutsy on Asus F3Jr laptop and I did and upgrade from 8.1 fglrx using the automatic installation.
                      So far tested:
xv - finaly works, no blocks or diagonal tearing, even HD demos run fine, it also uses noticably less CPU
3D - tested glxgears and fgl_glxgears, all works, score +- the same
suspend - tried a few times, seems to work
hibernate - not tested yet, worked on 8.1 but with dead sound
compiz - no luck but it has never worked in the past,so its perhaps some configuration mess on my side
