One seems to be running, the other not, but both of them are wasting the same amount of memory...

[[email protected] ~]$ ps aux | grep "X"
    toni 7620 0.0 0.0 3112 1012 tty1 S+ Mar10 0:00 xinit /usr/lib/X11/xinit/xinitrc -- -auth /home/toni/.serverauth.7604 -deferglyphs 16

KSysGuard shows 311456 MB for both. Is some mirror effect?

    Same thing here:
    root 3394 6.5 6.5 210232 134180 tty7 Ss+ 16:02 13:17 /usr/bin/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7
    root 3403 0.0 6.5 210232 134180 tty7 S+ 16:02 0:00 /usr/bin/X :0 -audit 0 -auth /var/lib/gdm/:0.Xauth -nolisten tcp vt7
    tom 9668 0.0 0.0 5204 796 pts/0 S+ 19:24 0:00 grep X

    I'm sure it's not a separate X session.
See the codes, from:# man ps

    Code:
S Interruptible sleep (waiting for an event to complete)
    s is a session leader
So the first occurrence is a session leader, the second is the event it's waiting for.
    YOU... to log off.
    Don't hurry, we have forever...

    Hip-hip!

While I would also enjoy seeing full documentation (for instance, does "Textured2D" matter? Do I need both TexturedVideo and VideoOverlay?) ...

I must first and foremost commend ATI for this release.

Everything is working on my x1250, and working pretty well.

Best release I've seen ... ever? Anticipating further fine tuning, I'm actually excited to own two ATI cards.

    Many thanks, Bridgeman!

no... we must build it... the documentation fot fglrx available is clearly outdated... maybe brigdman and the amd developers team could help us...

mhm, good idea. I went looking earlier for doc's regarding the xorg.conf options for fglrx, amdpcsdb, etc. What i found was a man page for fglrx that seems to be somewhat old and probably outdated. Is there any recent doc's lying around anywhere? other than forum posts

thx melcar, guys this indeed is a forum... thx to all of you... it would be interesting to make a document with all xorg.conf options for the fgrlx driver and their effects... and the way amdpcsdb works...

    It's in /etc/ati
Usually what you change in xorg.conf relating to the driver also affects amdpcsdb, but as far as I know, it doesn't work the other way (changes in amdpcsdb do not affect xorg.conf). All your multiple display settings, as well as post processing settings (AA, AF, Vsync) are also stored in amdpcsdb.

    So far tested:
xv - finaly works, no blocks or diagonal tearing, even HD demos run fine, it also uses noticably less CPU
3D - tested glxgears and fgl_glxgears, all works, score +- the same
suspend - tried a few times, seems to work
hibernate - not tested yet, worked on 8.1 but with dead sound
compiz - no luck but it has never worked in the past,so its perhaps some configuration mess on my side
So do you have 8.3 running? (you didn't mention the version) And which automated installer did you use? just ./ati-driver-installer-8-3-x86.x86_64.run or did you use --buildpkg Ubuntu/Gutsy.

Are you sure that it actually loads? (have you blacklisted the old fglrx driver) or are you maybe just running the old driver from the repository. I find it suspicious that you don't have aiglx and no flicker. sounds like the old driver...

Check in amdpcsdb to make sure that you don't have competing settings in there. In the event of a conflict, I believe amdpcsdb wins. Also note that the syntax is a bit different -- "Son" and "Soff" (meaning "string : on" etc... IIRC).
    I did exactly that:

    Section "Device"
    Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]"
    Driver "fglrx"
    Option "TexturedVideo" "on"
    Option "VideoOverlay" "off"

But when I run Totem it gets segfaulted.

    sh: jackd: not found
The program 'totem' received an X Window System error.
This probably reflects a bug in the program.
The error was 'BadValue (integer parameter out of range for operation)'.
    (Details: serial 78 error_code 2 request_code 140 minor_code 19)
    (Note to programmers: normally, X errors are reported asynchronously;
that is, you will receive the error a while after causing it.
To debug your program, run it with the --sync command line
option to change this behavior. You can then get a meaningful
backtrace from your debugger if you break on the gdk_x_error() function.)
