My (unconfirmed) understanding is that the version of glamor built into X server 1.16 runs urxvt quite a bit faster - but you need a pretty recent distro to get the 1.16 server. Anyways, approximate answer is "probably fixed already but not necessarily in the version of glamor you're running".

1.16.3 -- i'm using arch linux, so things are pretty recent

Not out, you will have to compile a git snapshot. Anyway even 1.16 is not that bad as you depicted it.
