Phoronix: AMD Marketing Manager Mentions Linux & Mantle

In a new AMD blog post about more Mantle-supported games being on the way, Linux is mentioned...

Phoronix, Linux Hardware Reviews, Linux hardware benchmarks, Linux server benchmarks, Linux benchmarking, Desktop Linux, Linux performance, Open Source graphics, Linux How To, Ubuntu benchmarks, Ubuntu hardware, Phoronix Test Suite

So AMD is really, really, really bringing HSLS to Linux?

    LOL.

And PR person gloryfing non-existent product which will be targeted to highly vocal and somewhat more knowledgeable audience.

    LOL.

Either somebody will get fired, or Mantle in fact is being worked on.

I think AMD is delusional if they think this is going to go anywhere.

Nvidia + Superior Drivers > AMD + Mantle

Mantle only makes sense at low to mid range performance when CPU power is a factor. When you've got a decent CPU (say >= sandybridge i5), Mantle doesn't really make sense. What does make sense is ditching AMD and their crappy drivers and going Nvidia.

But Mantle IS ABOUT ditching AMD drivers.

Didn't You listened to the devs who claimed that now THEY can optimize their games for AMD GPUs? Thats not PR statement. Its good old engineering statement. Removing driver from the equation is responsible for such opportunity.

They are not going to be banging registers. The drivel model just changed, and there is less handholding for developers. But sure as hell a driver will still be present.

But really, going AMD and betting on mantle on linux is too restrictive. Linux games are already a very small part, and you'll undercut it further by going mantle. Most games will still be OGL, so AMD (fglrx) will (very unfortunately) still suck.

At least his post shows what mantle is actually about. Vendor lock-in!

And now hurry up and buy "AMD Radeon? R9 Series" graphics cards suckers...

                Agree.

Driver will still be there. Not managing memory. Not managing synchronization. Not managing content generation. Not managing SLI. Not managing...

Complexity of Mantle from driver perspective is order of magnitude lower then of OGL.

But Yes OGL stays, and fgrlx will **** with it as does now.

But No, Mantle (if HSLS is also prestent) should be identical to that of Windows, and AMD should have easier time in keeping bugs in check. (So Linux vs Win will limit audience. Mantle vs OGL wont. For games which already use Mantle on Win).

And thats the problem in the past u could invest much money in graphic card and could have a realtivly cheap cpu all few years and the gpu was the important part. Today often the cpu gets the bottleneck, on basicly all mmo-games especialy shooters.

Mantle fixes that, so I love it, even if it dies in the future, it kicks all the lazy developoers especialy dx devolopers in their ass and they stop making people invest 30-50% more money into hardware so that they have a bit better developing experience.

Its basicly so far that with no amd cpu u can play stuff like planetside2 without big problems. AND even with a i7 the frames go under 30 at some situations.

Eeee. We talk about high end gamers here. Advising them to buy high end GPU lineup is... normal.
