Open-Source AMD UVD Now Works For RadeonSI

Phoronix: Open-Source AMD UVD Now Works For RadeonSI

The open-source AMD Radeon Linux graphics driver should now properly handle using the Unified Video Decoder (UVD) with RadeonSI (HD 7000 series and newer hardware) if using the very latest code...

I haven't tried it with fglrx nor radeonsi. But truly speaking to use a laptop for bitcoin mining seems like a little bit dubious idea for me.

It works well when mining bitcoin (~80% of catalyst) but it doesn't mine scrypt which makes it completely useless.

I don't have R series. So for me it is also irrelevant.

This is SteamOS problem. Normal distros have full support of open source drivers.

It is already fast enough for most users.

radeon-profile has some of these features.

The bottom line is that for me radeonsi is already much better than catalyst.

    - for the R series true audio support (does someone know if this is planned / work in progress?)

    - official SteamOS support replacing catalyst!

    - a bit more optimization / performance

and a nice gui (extending radeonprofile) with:
    - overclocking / fan control
    - different game profiles
    - 75 hz support (but I think thats up to mesa or the KDE monitor config tool)
    - full color / video settings
radeon-profile has some of these features.

Well my hd 5670 (evergreen) can not decode mpeg2 in hardware and the alternative shader implementation crashed. It has nothing to do with your special case, but when much more ppl would use it there should be some with a similar gpu and similar problems. Well when some only use mplayer maybe they did not enforce mpeg2 via vdpau, but when you try the same with xbmc then the system crashes much faster

    Option "AmdFanboyMode" "true"

maybe just because some people didn't have this issue or didn't know about it.
i don't run into xorg crashes and uvd always works for all my movie stuff.
maybe i'm so lucky lucky lucky or AMD loves me more

I do have xserver crash and not only with mpeg2 decoding, but also h264 HD videos.
Not reported them yet just because I don't have time to investigate.

What i really find weird is that nobody noticed the xserver crashes with mpeg2 decoding

BTW: RV7xx was affected from the same problem, and barely anybody noticed.
