  • Tired of being screwed by ATI? Do something!

    Well, after being screwed by ATI for several months I decided I have to take actions

    October 29: nVidia GeForce 8800GT 256/512MB release and in stock

    What you have now -> Good upgrade

    Radeon X1300 -> GeForce 7300GT
    Radeon X1600 -> GeForce 7600GS/GeForce 8500GT
    Radeon X1650 -> GeForce 7900GS/GeForce 8600GT
    Radeon X1950P -> GeForce 8800GS
    Radeon X1950XT -> GeForce 8800GT 256MB
    Radeon X1950XTX -> GeForce 8800GT 512MB

    Radeon HD2400 -> GeForce 8500GT
    Radeon HD2600PRO/XT -> GeForce 8600GT
    Radeon HD2900PRO -> GeForce 8800GT 512MB
    Radeon HD2900XT -> GeForce 8800GTS 640MB, NEW GeForce 8800GTS 512MB
    Radeon HD3800? -> GeForce 8800GT 256MB/512MB, NEW GeForce 8800GTS 512MB

    This table tells you what to buy. DO NOT BUY ATI if you ever want to use Linux! Remember!

    I will get ride of my X1900 and go to a 8800GT soon and post back results later!

    Yeah man It's a kind of habbit from ATI to make their products useless

      Fantastic plan! I've been pondering this myself, since the debacle that has been the last couple of driver releases.

        I just replaced my ATI 9600 XT with a GeForce 2 MX/MX 400, I had in an older computer. It's a much slower card 800 FPS in glxgears compared to 4500 FPS for the ATI 9600 XT.

        Compiz feels much smoother with this much slower and cheaper GeForce, and there are no white windows, no lag, no watermarks, no hard locks or other missing textures.

        Edit:
        Scrolling in firefox is much faster with the slower GeForce while Compiz is running, then with the 9600 XT.

          The problem is with laptop owners: we are really having an hard time out there with ATI provided laptops. Changing the whole thing would cost money and selling the laptop as second hand still would be a waste of the 50/60% of its original value.

            This is true. Unfortunately, you either keep waiting and HOPE that AMD gets it's act together quickly (don't hold your breath too long...) or you can bite the bullet and just switch over to another GPU. Yes, I know what that means- I bought my latest laptop specifically with this in mind.

              Funny how a stable, efficient driver can make the world of difference, isn't it?

                Same here, I have a little crappy PC I built recently and taken to university lab for my research project. This computer has a GeForce FX 5200 GPU with 64-bit memory and Celeron-D 331. However the compiz desktop experience of this pc is far better than my home desktop pc, which has a All-In-Wonder X1900 and 3.5GHz Core 2 Duo. This embarrasses me a lot

                I've already given up the TV/DVB functionality of the AIW but ATI wants to take away more from the card: OpenGL under Xgl is completely useless as I do intensive GLSL researches and Xgl won't let me use GLSL at all
