  • Difficulty with triple head setup on Ubuntu 13.04

    Greetings -

I posted about this on the xorg-driver-ati list, but the thread seems to have stalled, so I figured I would recap here. I have a system with three monitors, one 27" Korean special, and two Dell U2211H monitors split across two cards thusly:

    Code:
    caperry@discovery:~$ xrandr
    Screen 0: minimum 320 x 200, current 2560 x 1440, maximum 16384 x 16384
HDMI-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    DVI-0 connected 2560x1440+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 597mm x 336mm
       2560x1440 60.0*+
VGA-0 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
    HDMI-1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 475mm x 267mm
       1920x1080 60.0*+
       1280x1024 75.0 60.0
       1152x864 75.0
       1024x768 75.1 60.0
       800x600 75.0 60.3
       640x480 75.0 60.0
       720x400 70.1
    DVI-1 connected 1920x1080+0+0 (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) 475mm x 267mm
       1920x1080 60.0*+
       1280x1024 75.0 60.0
       1152x864 75.0
       1024x768 75.1 60.0
       800x600 75.0 60.3
       640x480 75.0 60.0
       720x400 70.1
VGA-1 disconnected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis)
The 27" display works as expected, but has two wallpapers: one at native resolution and one at 1920x1080. The two Dells are "on" (as in they came out of power save mode) but have nothing displayed. Attempting any changes via xrandr or arandr causes X to crash. I've tried several things, including moving one of the monitors to the first card, but I can never seem to get the second card to work. My current X config is available at http://paste.ubuntu.com/5655333/ and the logs from that config are available at http://paste.ubuntu.com/5655332/ but X crashes at startup. I thought it may be a GLX problem, so I disabled that but the result is the same. If I just launch with no config, then I get the 27" working and nothing else. The logs from that configuration can be seen at http://paste.ubuntu.com/5640585/ which also contains a crash when attempting to manipulate xrandr.

For reference, I have tried two nVidia GTX 520 cards as well, no luck with either the open source (same results as described above) or proprietary drivers. The nvidia proprietary drivers won't talk to the 27" display at anything other than 640x480, which it doesn't support. The fglrx drivers also crash on startup regardless of X config, typically requiring me to login via SSH and reboot as I could not even change VTY once the fglrx drivers crashed.

I had a similar setup working with a different motherboard and a pair of nvidia 8600 GT cards. I'm not sure why it's not working now with either the pair of AMD 6450 or nvidia 520 cards I have now. I suspect it's a problem with Ubuntu's compile of x.org but I'm not sure. Any assistance would be appreciated!

Just as a follow-up: I solved the problem by changing distributions. It seems something about the X system in Ubuntu 13.04 is changed specifically for Ubuntu. A configuration file which works on Arch, Fedora, and OpenSuSE on the same hardware does not work in Ubuntu. So, for now, I've just switched my desktop to Fedora 18. (I was having strange problems with other components of Ubuntu as well).
