I still had better temps with Catalyst.
Maybe it's better now though, it's not so tough to test your distro vanilla radeon and your mileage may vary(better or worse than me). But I think if there was a big breakthrough in this sector, I'd have seen it here on Phoronix ..
Dynpm still blinks, and that's the main problem. I've been running os drivers on my arch for a while because AMD stopped supporting my card in 12.6, but got fed up and downgraded my packages to accommodate catalyst again. Two big show-stoppers were, as i mentioned, glitchy dynpm and very sluggish scrolling in web browsers with power management set to low or mid. It doesn't sound like a big deal, but in the long run it's very annoying.

I have 5720 MOBILE, so OSS drivers around Ubuntu 11.12 where overheating for me preaty quickly, but I want to give another try.
(on idle , big heat and fan always on, on any workload it was nightmare after 1h. Under catalys its managalbe)
Dunno what you mean with 11.12 but you can check my PPA: https://launchpad.net/~oibaf/+archive/graphics-drivers

5720 IS CAPABLE OF DX11 you know... (OGL 4.3 in Linux speech) and is fairly capable gpu mid range. (Or was at the release :P, FIRST laptop with OGL 4.0 AND core i7!)

Only that OSS drivers overheated, while Catalyst do not. (And no I did not cleaned fans between switching those drivers either :P )

Thx to everybody else for tips.
o whoops i was 90% sure he said 5270, which i wasn't sure if that existed but i don't look at many low range GPUs lately. my bad. A 5270 would make more sense as a mobile gpu tho.

Unfortunately there wasn't any progress on power management lately, so you can be sure it will still overheat. BTW, to test progress on power management you only need the latest kernel. Newer mesa would only bring new OpenGL extensions and some performance improvements.
