FGLRX is not bad at all , its slightly behind nvidia thats true but not by a million miles. Where AMD have excelled is releasing specs for their GPUs. AMD should not be developing the free driver - that is the whole point of releasing the specs - it gives the community ( ie: me and you ) the opportunity to support ourselves rather than relying on the FGLRX devs. Like I said some people commenting on this thread do not understand!

well i differ with you about fglrx since it sux in all my supported PC's (4250, 4650, 4850x2 ) but you are 100% about AMD releasing the specs.

glxext whatever, i understand you are frustated cuz the state of fglrx but AMD is the most open source friendly company around for graphics these days and doesnt matter what half backed conspiracy theory you came up with cuz that is a fact, for example:

OpenGL 3+: not AMD fault plz plz learn how to use google lol, this one is 100% fault of Khronos group is you want to know who is responsible for putting patent sensible stuff in the specifications.

Long time to develop the OSS driver: is not AMD fault either is ours, the first time AMD released the first specs of their GPU, the graphic stack of linux was a 30 years dinosaur unable of take advantage of the new hardware feature, so the community has to start to creating an stable and more future proof graphic stack to be able later to actually develop nice drivers later.

but that is not true anymore, since aiglx/Xorg/Mesa 7+/gallium/KMS/drm/dri/egl/etc is in a nice shape lately and now we are beggining to see the fruits of those 3 years that took to create these plataforms. aka r300g is getting bleeding close to fglrx 9.3 and r600g is getting hell nicer everyday(at least for me).

Long time to support new GPU's: that is not true anymore either since cayman got an almost r700 level of support in less than 6 months because the plataform to create drivers is now in nice shape unlike 3 years ago

and from now on is only to get faster cuz even these days gallium drivers and mesa are still under heavy development, so once mesa reach latest opengl specification and get most of the common performance fixes inside mesa(maybe Q4 2011 or Q1 2012), add new drivers is going to be even faster

note: mesa now supports like 15% of the opengl 3 specification and there are several branches with more functionality lying around waiting for a bit more test and merge to master branch (maybe mesa 8.0)

GLSL 3+: glsl is agnostic to the release of opengl so this probably will be coming for mesa 8 even if there still patent issues holding opengl3 specs from merge to master.

so yes maybe for mesa 8 we can have from master most non patented crap specs of opengl 3+ still named 2.1 but supporting latest glsl from opengl 4.1 in the supported hardware at least(maybe for older card something like a fallback to llvm can be done for those hardware bits missing)

so plz investigate before posting crap here(you can always post crap in fglrx forum)
and invest the time you use to get some half backed conspiracy in offer some help to mesa or gallium guys, whining and conspiracy theory dont make development faster.

you can help mesa/gallium guyz in:
* send patches to fix problem you found
* offer yourself as tester and try to provide nice test data to these developers
* ask in mailing lists or irc one of the other zillion ways to help mesa developers, they are quite friendly if you ask for stuff decently
