    He meant 8.39, not 8.40

opengl 2.1 has been around for a while. like a year or two. so i doubt it.

    ------------------------------------------------------------

In the past we have also seen ATI Linux support come a month or two after the hardware launch, but ATI has fortunately learned its lesson. ATI/AMD will be providing timely Linux support for the Radeon X2000 (R600) series. Much adoration goes out to ATI/AMD for providing timely Linux support, which is a first in recent history for them.
AMD hasn't officially told us when the R600 Linux support will arrive, but having already seen the 8.37 driver we know that it will not come this month. (...) We would hope and expect that the official R600 product support will come next month or in July (by fglrx version 8.40).
that would be 2 or 3 months after hardware launch this time.

you know i'm getting the impression that we're gradually expecting less and less from ati. if 8.40 is "soon" for you. that's whole 3 months! it was supposed to be on time! and they even had extra time, while the card release was delayed!

OpenGL 2.1 is supposed to be the open competitor to DX10 innit? So put that in there to appeal more to non-MS users :P

It's late, but it's finally here. This morning AMD will be formally announcing their long-awaited Radeon HD 2000 series, or perhaps better known as the ATI R600 GPU. The AMD Radeon HD 2000 series features DirectX 10.0 (well, for those that use Microsoft products), Avivo HD, a programmable tessellation unit, CrossFire support, and much more. This morning we have our technology preview of ATI/AMD's next generation GPUs along with what's in store for Linux and the R600 series support.

And on a no-doubt totally unrelated note, AMD (pre) announces open graphics drivers...
