  • Quest: Optimal performance on WoW with fglrx

    Hello everybody,

The current performance of World of Warcraft with wine and fglrx on AMD/ATI GPUs is poor. Waiting for the open source driver to catch up is not an option.

    My main target system:
    AMD Phenom 9850BE 2.5GHz 4MB cache
    Corsair TWIN2X 6400C4DHX DDR2, 4096MB Kit w/two CL4 2GB Dimm's
    MSI R5770 Hawk Radeon HD 5770 1 GB GDDR5
10Mbit fibre network with good ping.

Running up-to-date Ubuntu 10.04 AMD64 with default fglrx driver and opengl code path is disappointing. Main challenge is performance in crowded cities and 25 raids. I tested the same set-up with a HD4670 card, and had practically unchanged performance in Dalaran (i.e., you can easily drop below 10 fps when it gets crowded). Even pairing the HD4670 with an aging Opteron 165 1.8GHz gave almost similar performance.

    Wine tips:
Open Source Software for running Windows applications on other operating systems.

Thought about working my way down the list of tips, but from various forum posts it seems others have done that with little success. Any reports on measures that actually works is greatly appreciated (other wine versions, other fglrx versions, settings, anything).
