  • X1250 and HD playback

Since fglrx dropped support for the X1250 card, I've been trying to get HD playback working on this box, without any success.

I believe the X1250 uses the R6xx chipset.

I'm running 2.6.32-r8 kernel under gentoo with radeonhd-1.3.0, and HD playback looks like slow motion.

Has anybody got HD playback to work smoothly with this board.

BTW, this video card is on ASUS M2S-VM motherboard.

X1250 uses the RS6xx, which is a combination of 6xx display logic and 4xx acceleration core.

Video playback can go through a number of different outputs - X11, Xv, GL etc... - which are you using ? Nearly all of the acceleration paths require a compatible kernel driver (aka drm) - are there any error messages in xorg.log or dmesg output ?

How do you choose the different playback output?

I just noticed lspci shows X1200 not X1250, should be similar chipset.

I don't see any errors in dmesg or xorg log file.

dmesg output related to drm, the version looks odd.

Every player has a different way of choosing output path, unfortunately. Which player(s) are you using ?

I've tried vlc and mplayer, same results.

Most of the time I use mythtv, but I believe it uses mplayer underneath.

mplayer has a -vo option, I think there's also a config file that lets you set defaults. Not sure if there are any messages telling you what output is being used.

Also make sure the Xv acceleration stuff is enabled in your xorg.conf file.

Looks like compiz is what is causing the slowdown, X running at 62%+ CPU and video is very slow.

After switching to openbox for video manager I ran mplayer with -vo xv option and HD video 1280x720p played back smooth; except for a horizontal break line appearing once in a while across the screen. Is there anyway to fix this?

Also, is there anyway to get this working with compiz?

Are you running video fullscreen or in a window ? If fullscreen, check to see if the "don't (un)redirect full screen windows" Compiz option is enabled, and turn it on if it is not.

That option essentially allows fullscreen apps to bypass Compiz while giving you nice effects the rest of the time.

That worked, thank you so much.

The only thing remaining is the squiggly line that comes and goes during the video transitions and fast motion. Are there any setting to deal with this?
