Unpleasant install experience. HD5850 Ubuntu 10.4.

Sorry for making another thread about lucid and 10.4.
I really can't understand why catalyst isn't working from basic steps like it used to in the past!


I'm running a visiontek 5850 (recently bought).

I perform a fresh install of ubuntu 10.4, run jockey to intall catalyst. I reboot and upon startup the ubuntu logo freezes right before it loads the desktop. (keyboard lights go off)

I insert nomodeset in grub, nope still doesnt work. I purge fglrx and re-install it without jockey and run aticonfig --initial -f to create the conf again..
but still it just freezes when it tries to load desktop.

The logs had said that it was trying alternative ways of probing for the card? I'm gonna reboot and get the complete message.

I've ran a 9800pro for years with fglrx in the past and never had the install been this much of pain from the start.

I found that the fglrx installed from Ubuntu repos didn't work very well with my hd5730 (mobile). So I removed the ubuntu version, and downloaded & ran the installer of the official ati version, and it works quite well.

My symptoms were different though - I was having major problems with fullscreen flash video (again).

Well I even tried installing or generating packages with the 10.4 installer. But same thing. The driver fails to see my 5850!!!

Is ATI deliberately not including card id's or something that would just piss me off so that I go back to windows.

I'm still getting:

My xorg.conf is always generated with aticonfig --initial

How can I fix this? is my Visiontek HD5850 an exception? any help would be appreciated! thanks.

Tried that. still same error in log even with no other xorg.conf files.
It flashes green right before it starts plymouth/splash then freezes when the dots fill up.
Starts up fine with the radeon driver...

I have it using generated packages from the installer once again. The repository ones haven't worked either.

What does your Device section look like?
Can't see any reason your card wouldn't be supported.

Anyway, your log file reads:

so it IS seeing your card.

What does your whole xorg.conf look like?

Something silly, have you tried another video output connector on your card? E.g. DVI instead of VGA, or the second DVI connector?
