  • no xv on HD4350. Ideas how to fix?

When i do xvinfo it says "no adapters present", which I take to mean XV isn't working.

I'm using radeon 6.13.0 from unstable on debian. Most of my other packages are from debian testing.
I have KMS switched on, but it doesn't work with it off either. Nor does it work if I roll back to 6.12 in testing.

I also tried installing fglrx using kano's script, and still no XV.

I'm thinking maybe it could be a kernel problem? Or a missing module or library or something.
I'm using a self-compiled 2.6.33.3 kernel using config I've used on previous kernels successfully.
I'm not exactly sure when XV stopped working, so I can't say what I had changed just prior to it failing. It certainly used to work in the not too distant past.

I'll paste my Xorg log file.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks!

Check your dmesg. See if it complains about missing firmware.

        Wow! spot on!

        I saw:
        [ 4.905170] [drm] Loading RV710 Microcode
        [ 4.905275] platform radeon_cp.0: firmware: requesting radeon/RV710_pfp.bin

        [ 4.942649] radeon 0000:01:00.0: disabling GPU acceleration

        So R700_rlc.bin was missing.

I installed firmware-linux-nonfree which installed the missing file(s) to /lib/firmware/radeon. They are dated 4th Mar 2010, is that new enough? If not where do I get newer firmware from?

I rebooted (not sure if that was strictly necessary) and firmware now loads.

It all works fine if I switch off KMS.

Unfortunately I still can't use KMS, as I get the error:

Any ideas? Or is this more a case of enjoy what you have now and wait for the appropriate packages to find their way into debian testing?

          Looks like a version mismatch.

It's quite likely that your librdm is too old.

You should try to have the whole stack -- kernel, libdrm, mesa and xf86-video-ati to be recent, mixing and matching older and newer stuff might lead to trouble.

Is your libdrm older than 2.4.16? Try updating it.

You should also notice that your glx module is the one from fglrx, not the Xorg one. If you want to use the open source drivers, make sure that fglrx is *completely* removed from your system.

@adamk : Well noticed! wrong GLX version.

The only glx package I seem to have installed is this one:
                libgl1-mesa-glx/testing uptodate 7.7.1-1

                $ ls -l `locate libglx`

I don't seem to have any others. How can I ensure I have the right one installed?

                Thanks!

The Xorg glx module is provided by the Xserver package, which should be xserver-xorg-core. Once you are sure that fglrx is completely removed, try reinstalling that package.
