AMD Linux GPU Driver Preps OEM i2c Bus Support Used For RGB Control & More

Phoronix: AMD Linux GPU Driver Preps OEM i2c Bus Support Used For RGB Control & More

A set of patches posted this week for the AMDGPU Linux kernel graphics driver is beginning to expose additional i2c buses that are used by some OEM/AIB partners for implementing RGB lighting controls and other extra functionality with Radeon graphics cards...

During the mining + scalper bot GPU apocalypse, the first reasonably priced new card I found for one of my kid's computers was a Gigabyte RX 6750 XT for $360 that has RGB. It will be nice to at least have the option to control the lighting when it becomes a hand me down to a different machine that's running Linux.

I'm so glad they're finally addressing this issue! We've had support for many Radeon cards' RGB controllers in OpenRGB for a long time now, but we could only access it on Windows via AMD ADL. I've tested the early WIP branch that led to these patches and OpenRGB was now able to control my ASUS TUF RX7800 XT and Sapphire Nitro+ RX580 RGB lighting. Great work Alex Deucher!

They should've added a long time ago at least a way to turn that crap off!
It's ok for people who want them, but I think most of the people prefer to look at the screen instead at their computer case.

Honestly I wish AMD would rather work on implementing all the features of the DisplayPort and HDMI connectors, including CEC support and DDC support!
AMD, even way behind Nvidia in GPU market share and features, seems to be like Ubuntu, taking every other road to do stuff no one or very few people asked for, while ignoring fixing the more annoying problems and missing features.

Even on windows the RGB solution is completely controlled by the OEM/AIB. The driver just provides access to the i2c buses. What RGB control chips and how they are used are completely up to the OEM/AIB. They provide an application which controls the RGB. So even with the buses exposed, you still need something like OpenRGB to control the LEDs.

You're contradicting yourself. If you like to look on your screen you'll never notice whatever that RGB stuff does so why do you even care?

I'm having a RGB blinking GPU, Memory and Mainboard in my private PC and it's got a case made of metal. I persoally don't care either and I don't see it. It can do whatever it wants.

I guess you just needed an opener for another pointless rant as you always do...

DDC is working just fine. Did you ever notice you didn't need to write a video modeline in any config? Well you might guess the reason.
DDC/CI is another beast but you'll have problems finding a display that supports it either. I haven't seen one in a long time.

CEC is a different matter but thats afaik patent encumbered, see https://patents.google.com/patent/US...oq=20080172504
So don't put your hopes high for any GPU manufacturer, I guess they see no real value in paying patent fees and rising GPU prices for that one.

Or just get a case that doesn't have a clear panel and then you don't have to see it. I have a motherboard that's bright red and orange with a mismatched GPU and some fans with non-controllable blue-only LEDs. None of this bothers me because I can't see hardly any of it in my fully-opaque case. These parts offered good performance for the money.

So maybe there's hope that I can finally change the stupid rainbow I've been seeing for the past 4 years on my RX 6800.

Up until now the only other solution was to physically disconnect the rgb cable on the GPU.

                    Thank you AMD.
