Phoronix: AMD Linux Graphics Driver To Switch To More Aggressive Power Heuristics By Default

It looks like for the upcoming Linux 6.13 kernel cycle there could be a nice performance boost for AMD Radeon discrete graphics cards with the AMDGPU kernel driver poised to set more aggressive power heuristics by default...

Is there any correlation between these changes and setting things like power_dpm_force_performance_level in /sys?

Yes. Setting 3D desktop was a workaround for not having to force high. This is great for desktop users.

What they could do, for laptops, is to detect/tell whether system is on AC and offer (to the userspace/user perhaps) that same heuristics/performance settings as with dGPU, while when is running off the battery then.... if this was "switchable" at runtime.

It's always been switchable at runtime. You can already do something like that. This just changes the default.

I think they meant it going from 3d desktop to powersave and back automagically based on the power cord's status.

Yes. You can do that today if you want to. Set up a script that listens for the plug event and have it switch the power profile on the GPU, change the governor on the CPU, etc.

Using gamemode to switch CPU and GPU to performance and never had any problems

I think they wanted that switching without all the DIY and scripting. It's low key asking about an AMD GPU GUI. An acronym for an acronym for an acronym. My God, what have we done?

That this happened only after four years without a real solution unfortunately is a prime example why regular people should just use Windows and Nvidia.
