Phoronix: Red Hat Engineer Working On DRM Panic Support For AMDGPU Driver

Red Hat engineer Jocelyn Falempe has been working to sort out DRM Panic support for the AMDGPU driver. The DRM Panic infrastructure is useful since it's what allows presenting a panic screen, a.k.a. a "Blue Screen of Death" type experience when running into major kernel problems. With Linux 6.12 there's now the ability to show QR codes for error messages with DRM Panic...

I guess seeing a QR code is nicer than seeing glitched graphics everywhere after resuming from suspend...

Nice! This seems to be working perfectly on my RX 6600 when I trigger a panic with sysrq.

I haven't seen any kernel panics in years. What am I doing wrong? I feel like I'm missing out on something.

I think just text showing which driver has paniced is probably more useful than either.

Better still, OpenBSD's approach of jumping into a debugger such as kdb so you can get a decent stack trace to act upon or notify the developers. Getting this on the glass console rather than via serial is so darn convenient.

In case you hadn't noticed, Linux has bigger aspirations than to be a hobby toy for 2.5 neckbeards that peer into the "glass console" all day long regardless.
This necessitates an actual user experience.

Driver so busted they have to make it break more-prettily

Kind of joking, but I've seen a large amount of AMDGPU-related issues across various communities in 2024.

Nah, it just means that now the developers have to tell people to disable the dumb error screen and give them a damn stacktrace. Your mindeset is wasting their time.

I am assuming you mis-quoted glass console because you are unsure of what it is. Have a read of this to update your knowledge. Its a fairly common term that doesn't need quoting.

And some people are like "I love this QR and systemd stuff... I love Windows and should really be using that instead of anything else".

About as useful as SNMP-enabling a coffeemaker or soda machine.

If you are old enough to know about those 2 references then what are you doing in a Moronix Forum? You should be out phishing!
