    I've just found the following:

    https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+s...r/+bug/364180/

    Code:
summary: - fglrx 8.600 segmentation fault with HD4870X2 and xserver 1.6
+ fglrx 8.600 segmentation fault with HD4850X2 and xserver 1.6
So I'll just have to keep on using RadeonHD for now.

What's the pont of an HD48050X2 without fglrx? It will perform the same as an intel integrated at that point...

        CRAP

I have a Intel i7 on a X58 board with a 4870X2 running DVI to HDMI to my LCD TV Running 1920x1080 (1080P). I cant get the freaking ATI Drivers to work. I have tried Fedora, Suse, and Now Kubuntu. What is the FREAKING deal. Works fine in Windows 7 Beta. All I had to do was install the driver and reboot and what do you know it works. I feel like back when I tried to run Red Hat 5.2 here. HELP??
Will I ever be able to run Linux? Sorry I have a decent modern system.... I feel like I get punished for this and it sucks.

you didn't get punished by buying a decent system, you got punished by buying an ATI card! learn your lesson this time .

ap90033, which distro/driver versions were you using and what was your main problem ? If there is a regression with the X2 HD4xxx boards (I'll try to find out) then your best bet for the short term might be to try an 8.10 *buntu install and a slightly older driver, maybe Cat 9.1 for now.

              reply

Currentlt Kubuntu 9.04 OS Video Driver ATI 9.4

I run windows 7 beta and want to dual boot. I like cutting edge and the latest KDE and linux in general looks sweet if i could get it working.
              Problem
I install OS works fine, I install the ATI Driver (followed the ATI Unofficial Wiki Ubuntu Jaunty Driver Install) and follow the instructions then reboot and bam no screen, its garbled trash.

FYI, Catalyst 9.4 and 4870x2 with Ubuntu 8.10 32bit seems to be working, i.e. I didn't need any special tricks. I confirm that I had a Xorg 1.6 segfault with Ubuntu Jaunty 64bit as reported by gzunk. I'm assuming (hoping) 8.10 64bit will work, so I'll stick with that until Xorg 1.6 and catalyst 9.4 learn to play better together.

                Edit: I confirm 8.10 64bit with Catalyst 9.4 (8.602) is working with my 4870x2.

So when will i know it is safe to use a newer distro? I tried Mandriva 2009 and it works, but kind of flaky and slow so I tried Mandriva 2009 "spring" and cant get the install to work xserver crashes. Same tye of crap with fedora 10.
I would rather wait and have a new OS with Newer drivers. Never did care to go with older stuff. Oh and to the guy who posted about not buying ATI, keep in mind that Vista 64 bit AND Windows 7 BETA run GREAT. I jsut wish the day would come when linux would get some unity and polish. I think not having enough choices is bad but man, seems like the linux community went the freakin' extreme opposite direction.
(I mean really, do we need like 20 different apps to burn a cd? )
Sorry to rant, just frustrated, I have been toying with linux since Red Hat 5.2 and see the potential and it is wasted because it refuses to change in the ways that would probably allow much greater usage worldwide. Oh and I am tired of the same old windows philosophy and would love to see this change.

Watch for us to announce Ubuntu 9.04 support. We included "early look" support in Cat 9.4, ie "it loads and runs but we are still working on it".
