Also consider that AMD still had quite a lot of debt. They were just a couple years into a strong run, and some people were even forecasting a global economic slow-down. Those aren't actually the conditions where you want to be taking on yet more debt, if you don't absolutely have to.
It's like I was just saying to qarium : just because a company has some profits, doesn't mean every customer gets everything they want.
One reason I dislike HiP is specifically because it was clear to me that it would be a huge distraction from my priorities. That doesn't mean I fault AMD for going there -- I can understand why they felt they needed to. I'm still not convinced it was the only way. In fact, Intel is currently trying to prove it wasn't.
