      HTPC doesn't care about VRR, so that shouldn't be a problem right? Or is it that HDMI 2.1 can't be made available in open source drivers, period?

        My (low quality) understanding is that HDMI "anything" can't be made available in open source drivers without explicit permission from the HDMI consortium, except to the extent that HDMI is only acting as a wrapper around DVI features.

          IANAL, but my limited understanding is that older versions of HDMI were all pretty much implemented in hardware, so it automagically works and you don't have to expose the underlying spec. With HDMI 2.1, a lot of the new features require significant implementation work in software. Implementing that would expose the underlying spec.
