Look how quickly Microsoft took up AV1 unlike VP9.
With the exception of Facebook the rest of the respective companies were founding members of AOMedia. So not exactly surprising for Microsoft, but still good to see as it really helps to push the industry along and helps on the hardware side of things.
There are a lot of heavy hitters backing the codec. If it was just YouTube you wouldn't see the pace we're seeing.
Platforms like YouTube, Netflix, Amazon Prime use software based encoders even when they're encoding for H.264. YouTube uses the reference encoder. Netflix has been sponsoring SVT-AV1 development. Vimeo as another example has been sponsoring rav1e.
