Any kind of support for AV1 is welcome, but it's a bit ironic that the least demanding part (decode) gets hardware acceleration first. Hopefully encoding arrives in next generation.

Why is that ironic? The common use case is media playback, not creation.

Looks like nothing supports OpenMax (not ffmpeg, not mpv, not Firefox). They better work on VAAPI instead.

gstreamer supports OpenMAX. VA-API did not support AV1 when we started working on this.

This is a huge improvement compared to previous generations.

Yeah, because this is exactly what Linux desktop needs right now, yet another hardware video decoding interface that nobody really supports.

Just as the major consumers of these interfaces (media players and web browsers) finally committed to VA-API.

gstreamer supports OpenMAX. VA-API did not support AV1 when we started working on this.

Sadly, GStreamer is irrelevant today.

Why not work with VA-API to add AV1 support to the interface?

AV1 support was only added to VA-API a few weeks ago. I can be extended to VA-API now, but it didn't exist months ago when we started working on this.
