Phoronix: AMDGPU TMZ + HDCP Should Allow Widevine DRM To Behave Nicely With AMD Linux Systems

Coming together this year for the mainline Linux kernel was the AMDGPU Trusted Memory Zone (TMZ) capability for encrypted video memory support with Radeon GPUs. This topic was talked about at this week's XDC2020 conference...

Are there similar features on other chips used in smartphones like Mali and adreno?
Can this allow widevine on video core (raspi) and Nvidia as well eventually with free drivers under Linux?

So this might open up higher than 720p on drm streams for linux(ala netflix). That would be useful.

        Yes and no.

Netflix has some strange deal with Microsoft that only IE/Edge browser could play 1080p (and more) resolution, so officially will nothing change even with HDCP support in Linux.

Good news is that this artificial 720p limitation could be easily bypassed. 1080p could be "unlocked" with addon for Firefox (https://addons.mozilla.org/pl/firefo...1080p-firefox/) or via plugin in Kodi.

The problem is that many materials require HDCP protection that is not available in Linux - so resolution is blocked to about ~480p/540p and this limitation cannot be bypassed by addon. For bigger resolution - HDCP support in Linux is needed (or cracked version of Widevine DRM, but even if such crack exists - no one will publish it because Google will update/fix Widevine in short time).

Linux on a raspberry pi 4 can run 1080p Netflix in software decoding, but for Disney, amazon and hbo or hardware decoding, a proper lvl 1 wv level is required including verified media path and hdcp.
Hopefully this work will allow better quality and support on Linux which runs a lot of custom htpc solutions.

I'm assuming this would only work on verified kernels, like what Google could provide over Chromebooks, correct? And not regular desktop linux systems.

Guess I need to watch the video.

              Trusted?

Why not just call it "secret"?

Hasn't the market proven that consumers will pay a reasonable price for streaming media vs VPN'ing and torrenting? Why is evilcorp still obsessed with DRM and trying to engineer data that can't be copied? Just let me pay you $9.99 a month so I can watch re-runs of the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in peace
