Valve never hires anyone to work on Nouveau. Isn't that digital racism?

Valve is happy enough with the proprietary NVidia drivers.

Plus it's impossible to clock them up to a decent speed without the properly encrypted firmware, so trying to create a good gaming experience on Nouveau is simply impossible - no reason for them to waste their time on something that can't be done.

It is up to Nvidia really to alter this, if they don't support the community with the firmware blobs to get re-clocking supported, it makes it a tough choice to invest into their open driver stack. Red Hat does it nonetheless, but you must ask them why they do it as I don't get it under these circumstances. As Nvidia wanted to announce something big this year (which hasn't happened yet), there is some hope though that they will be more friendly to the open source community in the future. I only start to believe it when I see it though.

On the plus side, it makes for a much easier choice to not invest in their hardware, unless you have a CUDA dependency.

Some days, I dream of a world where we have drivers for both companies' cards that work well, on both the OS's that matter, at the same time. But I know such a world could never come to pass: the universe, it seems, cannot hold all of these things at once, and we are doomed forever to watch them ebb and flow like opposing forces...

Well Valve's primary domain is gaming and until the Nouveau team figures out the encrypted firmware issue than its simply wasted effort to for them to work on Nouveau (as others have said).

The best thing Valve could do here is to force NVidia to open up in other ways, no idea how such a thing would play out though.

Maybe they are developing an Oculus Quest rival based on an AMD chipset and which uses SteamOS?

No, because Nvidia itselfs gives a f*** on nouveau, while AMD works on AMDGPU and Mesa too.

Why should Valve support an (from Nvidia) unsupported driver?

Thats not really correct, Nvidia did help nouveau out already a few times and they use nouveau on the BSP for their tegra based chips.
