Phoronix: RADV ACO Adds A Version Hack/Workaround For An Extra 2~5% Boost In SotTR

While many hoped that with the adoption of Vulkan it would lead to avoiding driver-specific checks/workarounds, that's still not been the case to workaround various driver bugs and other issues. The RADV ACO compiler back-end has resorted to altering its version string in order to obtain 2~5% higher performance in Feral's latest Linux game release...

We try to avoid game workarounds as much as possible in the driver but sometimes it's impossible. This could be removed with a SotTR update but it's understandable that Feral won't make a new game release just for that...

Note that this doesn't give any boost, it just restores previous performance before we decided to remove the LLVM version string.

It seems to be a workaround for a workaround.

I think it would have been worth asking Feral for them to change this than to just go ahead and make the workaround. Even if they refuse to make the change for RotR, they could at the very least know to avoid this problem in other projects.

I don't think it will benefit the Intel driver. They were specifically checking the AMD Vulkan driver version string.

It seems highly doubtful Intel IGP graphics can run this game at anything playable. Maybe at minimum in game settings and 640x480, it's highly doubtful.

In the early 2000's Intel nearly killed PC gaming because their IGP performance. Nowadays most game devs simply avoid trying to support Intel hardware at all, not trying to support Intel is what saved PC gaming those years ago.
