  • gdm login screen seen for a sec, then x crashes

    ubuntu intrepid 32-bit, x1600, fglrx 9.1.

After installing using buildpkg, changing xorg.conf from radeon to fglrx and rebooting I get to see gdm login screen for about half a second, than x crashes. In xorg.conf I disabled composite extension, and this still happens. Is there something to be done to make it work, or to diagnose it further?

None. That is one of the xorg.conf I tried which produced the error:
      Code:
      # xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
      #
      # This file was generated by failsafeDexconf, using
      # values from the debconf database and some overrides to use vesa mode.
      #
      # You should use dexconf or another such tool for creating a "real" xorg.conf
      # For example:
      # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I have a similar problem short after upgrading from Hardy to Intrepid.
If I remember this was corrected by removing anything in Extensions section of xorg.conf.
Also the Module section can be cleaned up, I only keep glx now.

              Tried cleaning xorg.conf

After cleaning xorg.conf I get the same results: a glimpse of gdm, then crash.
I used this time the following xorg.conf:

I have no problem with the radeon driver so this is clearly a problem with fglrx. I am willing to help debugging it, but I need some clue so I know what to look for...

Try putting this option under Device section:
                    Option "TexturedXRender" "off"

                    update amdpcsdb running aticonfig --tls=0

                    restart X

                    Working...
