Phoronix: Radeon Software For Linux 19.30 Brings Radeon RX 5700 Support

As a follow-up to this morning's Radeon RX 5700 / RX 5700 XT Linux benchmarks, AMD has now published a packaged launch-day Linux driver for those wanting to use these new RDNA/Navi graphics cards on Linux without building your own kernel/Mesa/libdrm/LLVM... Well, assuming you are on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS...

This Radeon™ Software for Linux® release is only compatible with the Radeon RX 5700 Series of cards – no other products are supported.
That sounds like, here is something to have - but don't do comparisons yet

Sounds to me like they didn't want a repeat of, IIRC, Vega's launch. One easy & supported option is better than just the manual method. At least this time there's one OS with official driver support that isn't Windows.

Wait, there's a Vulkan driver in this package? Which one...? :-)

By the way I guess they specifically mean 18.04.2 HWE so that's at least support for a 4.18 kernel and Xorg 1.20. So if you just keep your kernel down it should work on newer distros... ?

Well in this context it means AMDVLK with proprietary shader compiler right? So part of AMDVLK is done at least then...

It is a blob, so who knows... it could be but might not be proprietary shader compiler

It could be even just closed opensource you know

Don't think there is any doubt amdvlk is ported and working, the problem.is the source code isn't availble outside AMD yet. Remember open release isn't open development.

Yeah yeah sure, it's just that there was some confusion whether there was _any_ Vulkan support at all, and it wasn't mentioned in the article.
