Phoronix: AMDGPU Begins Staging 200+ Changes For Linux 5.2 Kernel

With the feature cut-off past for getting new Direct Rendering Manager driver changes into DRM-Next ahead of the Linux 5.1 merge window expected to open up this weekend, AMD developers have already begun staging their latest feature work for what in turn will target the Linux 5.2 kernel a few months down the line...

      Amen to that !!

I'm also curious to see how much both AMD and Google contribute to and continue to develop for AMD based Chromebooks now that they are out.

It's been nearly a week since Acer dropped the news that they, along with HP, would be debuting one of the industry's first AMD-powered Chromebooks. We have an article with all the necessary info about the device Acer brought to CES 2019, but here's the lowdown: AMD's A4 and A6 processors are going to give...

We just published the initial details on both the first AMD offering from HP and the new, somewhat-unexpected x360 14 G1 just yesterday, but last night we were able to swing by HP's booth and give both of these new Chromebooks a test drive. The takeaways? Well, with the AMD devices, we were pretty happy...

The APU's in both Acer's and HP's Chromebooks are based on the Excavator derived Bristol Ridge APU which is the process upgraded version of the Carrizo APU.

The lower end A4-9120C is clocked at 1.6ghz with a GPU clock at 600MHZ. The higher end A6-9220C is clocked at 1.8ghz with a GPU clock at 720mhz

Glad to see AMD has finally broken into the Chromebook market and is taking on Intel's hegemony in this space.

Maybe a Chromebook shootout is in order ?

Perhaps one day my Hawaii will be able to resume from suspend on a newer kernel than 4.18. Display just doesn't wake up afterwards and I can't ssh in or find any logs...

Edit: appears to be fixed in 5.0.

Actually, this seems like a minimal-effort dumping of excess Stoney Ridge inventory. That CPU is from 2016, so three years old now. And did you read the footnotes? They ran the benchmarks which show how great Stoney Ridge supposedly performs against the Pentium N4200 / Celeron N3350 (also launched in 2016) on Windows 10 and Android ffs. Not even bothering to run any benchmark on Chrome OS.

I think it is rather because Intel's 14 nm shortage is particularly bad at the low end, so AMD saw a one-off opportunity to sell some Stoney Ridge chips that were collecting dust in their warehouses.
