Due to the comments in this topic I was able to diagnose my issue with the driver.
I have an RX460 with an ultrawidescreen monitor. With latest kernels I was getting a blank screen unless I added amdgpu.dc=0 to the boot parameters, when 1080p would work but native would result in garbled text
I had previously tried updating the HDMI cable to a newer one, to see if that fixed things. It didnt.
After reading these comments I tried an older HDMI cable I had that was over 3m long. With it I now get full native resolution. Wahay!
