    ernstp Now it's making sense. It did feel like I was having some shader compilation stutters and if runtime cache is the default then I guess that's going to be the case every time I restart the game.

    Doesn't explain the GPU hang or the Wayland stutters though. The latter is probably not a driver problem though because I get that in a lot of games and not just Vulkan games either.

    It caches shaders to disk.

    After spending some time testing AMDVLK with Dark Souls III and NieR: Automata I have concluded that it stutters quite a lot more on Wayland. On x.org things are smooth, similar to RADV but I did get a GPU hang in NieR: Automata after a while so I guess RADV is still more reliable, at least for DXVK/Proton.

    debianxfce I've got i3 installed alongside GNOME for those times when I want simple, and I agree GNOME on Wayland isn't quite good for gaming yet although it's gotten a lot better recently with things like HW Presentation Timing being implemented (that patch is already included in mutter on Debian Sid).

    Also, interestingly, it seems DXVK with AMDVLK is running as a native Wayland application. When I run 'xlsclients' the only application I can see is Steam.
