  • Scourge on R500

    Hi,

The game scourge on my X1700 is totaly unplayable (http://scourgeweb.org/tiki-index.php) : too slow

I tested it on a intel X3100 and it's better : too slow but better. It was playable on my old laptop (a radeon 9000IGP)

what is lacking to make it faster ?

    I use :

    xorg-server 1.5.3
    mesa 7.2
    libdrm git
    x11-drm git
    xf86-video-ati git

    xorg.conf

I don't have an ATI card so I can't help you solve it, but why don't you just install the xfglrx driver??

it's a good question but I won't use a closed driver if a open exist for many reason :

      - basic operation (like VT switch, 2D, XV, ...) work perfectly (or nearly)... not really the case of fglrx last time I tried it
      - fglrx is often (alway??) behind what we can find in distribution : how many distribution doesn't want to include last kernel or last xorg version to remain usable with closed drivers and I won't encourage this.
      - I can have answer directly from dev, not : wait a month and if you have luck that will be better
      - ethicaly..

I choose to buy a laptop with ATI card just to have free driver, so fglrx is not a option for me..

I'm not familiar with scourge but many games have options which disable use of specific GL functions, and those would be worth a try. The open driver doesn't yet stupport the same level of GL functionality as fglrx, and the non-implemented functions fall back to software (which is very slow).

I took a quick skim through the FAQ and only saw mention of changing shadow detail (not sure how to do this) and changing texture bpp from 32 to 16. Shadow detail might be worth playing with -- not sure how SCOURGE handles shadows but that might be what is accelerated in fglrx but not in the open drivers.

I remove all I can, but no luck...

The major slowdown is on the intro of game, in game (hard to go there to the speed...) the speed is OK but there are artifact :

I fear have to forgot this game for the moment...or if I can help a dev to improve the situation ?

I just tested with scourge from svn and it works nearly perfect with good framerate :

~ 40FPS (all graphics options to max except aniso at 1680x1050)

I don't know what they have made to fix compatibility with ati xorg driver but result is GREAT.
