    Regarding the black screen on start, disable { ForceFullCompositionPipeline = On }

      The NVIDIA drivers are doing something non-standard. Within gnome-shell they've added a specific check for this driver issue. File a bug with KDE and mention that gnome-shell has a workaround. It shouldn't be too hard to find the added workaround.

        Why should the open source community work around bugs? Isn't it in NVIDIA's best interest to work with the standard?

          You must be very new to Linux. NVIDIA does NOT work with the standard, they try to push THEIR standard. They don't fix minor bugs, they wait others to get pissed off and make workarounds.

            I would not say this in general, NVIDIA certainly tries to push a different Wayland implementation upstream but for OpenGL and Vulkan there are official tests. OpenGL 4.4/4.5 results can be seen online but for OpenGL 4.5 i only see (23) NVIDIA results, AMD/Intel did only verify 4.4. Why should it be bad to use verified hardware/drivers? Most likely the tests are not testing all corner cases which can be implemented differently but in general you can certainly expect that it works. Game/app devs need to test with multiple cards in best case but often they work with NVIDIA first and add support/workarounds for others later. You mainly decide if you want to go the mesa way or stay with working binary drivers with the card you buy. AMD has put much effort into mesa, Intel too and if your favorite games run fast enough using open drivers have fun! But please don't forget the NVIDIA first Linux ports.

              Xfce does not use GPU acceleration in any way, so your feedback is invalid.
