It's not necessary to have it but it's quite a cool device that you can also use to read dvd/blu-ray, schedule and save TV recordings, watch VOD, be a chromecast/dlna/airplay sink, view music/photos from a shared local network hard drive, browse the internet, applications like twitch/youtube etc... Not everybody has a SmartTV here and they wouldn't do as much anyways and anyways it's included in the subscription price so why not :P.

I'm wondering if by now they're using Qt 5. Some feedback from customers would be nice as well. Most smart tvs have a super slow UI, so wonder how this works. Various bits in the presentation indicate that the UI should be really responsive.
Yeah the box was released in 2011 and its firmware is regularly updated. It uses Qt 5.5 and Wayland 1.9.0 now. I have one so I can say it's smooth and perfectly usable and most of people I know who owns it are happy about it, especially considering how bad the alternatives from the other ISPs are.

You can see a demo of it here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wft1V45KWDs It's a bit outdated though.

Well, that's one box running customized software. But yes, I guess that qualifies as "in production".

Wayland is also used in Tizen for awhile now. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tizen

On top of that NVIDIA seems to be the only vendor who is suggesting this approach. I seriously hope they have a good reason for it. I don't think NVIDIA folks have said specifically why they want information that is available at commit time but not until after allocation; then again, I'm perhaps not qualified to say that there aren't good reasons for it. Just from a glance I'm not seeing hard facts.
Of course they have good reason for suggesting it: they've looked at everything on their technical merits and made a choice they feel is best. Other people disagree, but that doesn't mean that they're terrible people, or that NVIDIA are only pushing this for ulterior motives and people resisting are freedom fighters, or that NVIDIA are pushing it because they're heroes of graphics and people resisting hate and resent their superiority. They have a technical opinion, others have theirs, end of.

(And yes, part of the resistance is that introducing additional codepaths increases the complexity and the cost of making change. Having the stop-gap RPi renderer in Weston makes changing that interface much more difficult, since it's liable to break something which isn't particularly well tested by the developers. Even despite all the caution, we do break it from time to time. And the only thing worse than software which doesn't support something, is broken software ...)

so we have at least tizen, sailfish, webos, fedora and automotive linux are using wayland in production and you are countering it with something which has nothing to do with wayland at all?

                But it proves the point.
Also, your response is an argumentative fallacy (guilt by association).

Yeah, yeah, I get it. Wayland is the greatest thing since sliced bread, but Nvidia is holding it back. Excuse me for not following Wayland closely enough to know it made its way into embedded stuff.

Really? So waht would you call this: http://www.geforce.com/drivers/results/101423

They may have no driver that you like, but making statements like the above only makes you sound like a zealot.
