  • GeForce FX 5200 causes problems

    Hey everybody,

I have Feisty Fawn (Ubuntu 7.04) and OpenSuSE 10.3
running. Now I have been trying to download and install
graphics support for feisty as well as OpenSuSE and
that is not very easy to do.

After I have downloaded the necessary components, when I want to install everything the whole process is terminated.
I'm using the official drivers from NVIDIA Website.

And do I have to compile my own kernel to get 3d opengl support?

For Answers I would be glad...
    Yours sincerely,
    Andreas P. (www.kyeldon.net)

No, you don't have to build your own kernel, you are missing the development package for the kernel or the kernel source (configured for your currently running kernel) from the repositories. However, you don't actually need to install the drivers off NVIDIA's site, you'll be much better (on Ubuntu, at least) if you get the 'envy' program/script. It will help you install the drivers with any additional dependencies it may have (I do believe it DOES actually build the driver, but it'll get everything in place for you to do that). I'm not familiar with how to install any binary blobs in Open SuSE, though.

      Well boot Kanotix Thorhammer with

      nvidia

as option and it will download and install the driver. Also you can update maybe 5 min after I see that a new driver is out with

      update-scripts-kanotix.sh
      chvt 1
      install-nvidia-debian.sh

a new one... Not possible to do that more easy... You are just using the wrong system.
