Not every distro is as masochistic as Gentoo.

sure... if you want to set Linux back by about 20 years... and pretty much remove any HTPC use cases. Yay... let's pay $100 for an OS for an HTPC because we're not allowed to use a proprietary driver in Linux. Sounds like a real winning strategy.

Sure, what driver should I then use for CUDA development?

              Why??

what purpose would that serve, other than to ruin the platform?

There is a lot of industries/groups/people out there, using gnu/linux + binary drivers.

              - HTPC (home theater PC)
              - HPC (High performance computing)
              - film/animation (ie: Disney, Pixar, DreamWorks, etc)
              - mobile/tablet market
              - automotive industry
              - other industrial applications
              - scientific/academic research
              - game development

...and so on and so on...

While I do respect your ideals, I think that statement is incredibly naive. && myself, if i was stuck with nouveau ~ Linux wouldn't be on my desktop.

So you want them to ban the best driver?

I do manage 80+ Linux desktops for a robotics company. It is far from a perfect driver, and yet is a head above all others.

gnome shell users should better not update their nVidia driver yet. http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=174049
new releases not only fix bugs, they also introduce bugs it seems
Well or it's all gnome shell's fault...

Slightly off topic, but I do have a question.

Since the update to 295.20, Powermizer settings have disappeared. Is this because it's on a desktop system, or should it be there?

                      GTX 260 btw
