Those prices indicate why it is better to have competition, Nvidia is just setting the price to whatever they want!

The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 is set to retail for $1,999 USD while the GeForce RTX 5080 will come in at $999 USD, the GeForce RTX 5070 Ti at $749 USD, and the GeForce RTX 5070 at $549 USD. The GeForce RTX 5070 is rated for around GeForce RTX 4090 level performance. These graphics cards will begin going on sale this quarter.
To put these prices into perspective, the Geforce 2 Ultra launched in 2000 at a price of $500 which is about $916 today.

The Geforce 3 launched in 2001 at a price of $500 which is about $891 today.

Both of these cards where the top of the line offering at the time.

The RTX 4090 launched at $1600 two years ago.

The RTX 5070 price of $549 for a card that can match a RTX 4090 is not bad at all.

Of course i would never spend this much money on a video card unless I was using it to make money, so...

It's all about the power draw for me, both at home and at work. I've got a limited power budget to work with for both. I don't need 24GB of VRAM for games so a 5070 or 5070Ti might be appealing (depending on markup here), but for work I'm stuck firmly in the "need 48GB+ GPUs" niche. And dual-slot is non-negotiable: When I have systems I need to stuff 10 GPUs in, quad-slot monsters are not an option. Let's see what the prices are for the Quadros.

And as I've no idea about salary inflation in the US, sophisticles; have salaries risen commensurate with the figures you quote? I know in the UK, EU and Japan that salaries have nowhere near kept in sync with the general rate of inflation, so while the "relative" prices might not seem so extreme, actual affordability has (relatively) dropped.

That's the part I don't really believe. Having worked with Nvidia closely before and them loving throwing out numbers to make things look good.

My understanding is that this claim is not true in terms of raw horsepower. It is really about tapping into the new DLSSv4 capability. When leveraging that to generate 3 frames instead of just a single extra. So if that's the case it is closer to half of the raw performance. Perhaps they there in a few other tricks to help with that number.
