I would really love if that was true as EGL and GLX are glues for OpenGL to work with the OS. But I'm not sure that's the only role they play.

Once GNOME caved in then this was pretty much obvious for everyone that knows NVIDIA.

It's not fear, it's accurate prediction of the future trends.

Since NVidia is among the sponsors of XDC 2018, which is end of September, they probably will give a talk that includes any news about “UDMA”. At XDC 2017, they were still promoting it, but I’m not sure how much agreement/support it was getting. It seemed (some time ago) that the preferred implementation would require some OS support, where NVidia was given doubts that they would receive it. So I don’t think that progress depends entirely on NVidia, and like the decision to support eglstreams, the decision to encourage NVidia to go forward with UDMA may come slowly. It appears certain that some NVidia engineers are strongly in favor of this project, but that may be not enough to fight the odds, so to speak.

Then people would whine about the closed firmware, just they do in case of AMD cards. Well, at least they did back when AMD used to sell video cards, that is.

Well, to quite some users what matters is not who whines, but whether the hardware works.
