Phoronix: NVIDIA Contributes EGLStreams Improvements For GNOME's Mutter Wayland Support

GNOME's Mutter Wayland compositor support is among the few Wayland implementations offering support for EGLStreams so it can play along with the approach used by the NVIDIA proprietary driver as an alternative to the GBM API used by the open-source graphics drivers. One of the NVIDIA engineers has just furthered along Mutter's EGLStreams support...

Id rather nvidia provide proper specs and firmware to Nouveau.

Are there any news regarding the "Unix Device Memory Allocator"?
On github the latest commit is from February https://github.com/cubanismo/allocator

At this rate the 'temporary' EGLStreams solution will become permanent, as many here feared.

I would really love if that was true as EGL and GLX are glues for OpenGL to work with the OS. But I'm not sure that's the only role they play.

And then GPU without Vulkan support will be useless.

Once GNOME caved in then this was pretty much obvious for everyone that knows NVIDIA.

It's not fear, it's accurate prediction of the future trends.

Since NVidia is among the sponsors of XDC 2018, which is end of September, they probably will give a talk that includes any news about “UDMA”. At XDC 2017, they were still promoting it, but I’m not sure how much agreement/support it was getting. It seemed (some time ago) that the preferred implementation would require some OS support, where NVidia was given doubts that they would receive it. So I don’t think that progress depends entirely on NVidia, and like the decision to support eglstreams, the decision to encourage NVidia to go forward with UDMA may come slowly. It appears certain that some NVidia engineers are strongly in favor of this project, but that may be not enough to fight the odds, so to speak.

Then people would whine about the closed firmware, just they do in case of AMD cards. Well, at least they did back when AMD used to sell video cards, that is.

Well, to quite some users what matters is not who whines, but whether the hardware works.
