Intel's Vulkan Linux Driver Lands More Performance Optimizations Ahead Of The B570

Phoronix: Intel's Vulkan Linux Driver Lands More Performance Optimizations Ahead Of The B570

It's not only the Intel GPU compute stack seeing some nice improvements recently but over with the Mesa 25.0-devel code for the Intel "ANV" open-source Vulkan driver there have been some new performance optimizations arriving this week...

It's really good to see Intel working on its open-source driver. I hope that Intel GPUs become an alternative to AMD's, and that in the future these drivers will be as good as those on Windows.

I'm hope Intel's ANV becomes the premier Vulkan driver experience on Linux especially with G31 on the horizon. I'd love to see it surpass performance on Windows. Compute and OpenGL is great but Vulkan still needs work.

Hopefully much better than under Windows because the Win drivers are utter shit (for gaming at least).

Correct, and for them to get a real foothold on Linux they need to get it right because almost the entire Linux gaming platform is sitting on the shoulders of Vulkan. OpenGL is already good, but that doesn't matter too much these days. If they can get the Vulkan Linux stack up to snuff they will have my money.

Nice, hoping the for B770 launch soon.

Although desktop reliability and performance are complete fine, I see significantly lower than Windows game performance for A580 with Xe drivers in Linux 6.12. I am happy to hear Intel continues improving performance for both Alchemist and Battlemage.

Today, I don't have a GPU, as I'm waiting for AMD's RDNA4 presentation. However, I'm very inclined towards a B580; it will also depend on the price when it arrives here in my country (Brazil).

The performance gap between Windows and Linux is still significant, but I believe Intel will eventually achieve equal or even better performance on Linux. Of course, their focus is on Windows to capture a share of the market, and now, with the controversy around weak performance on lower-end processors, they will likely focus all their efforts on reversing that. It would be interesting to conduct a CPU test on Linux to see if this issue applies there as well.

Another test I'd like to see is gaming performance with Proton using DXVK vs. OpenGL (PROTON_USE_WINED3D=1 %command% on Steam), as the OpenGL driver is excellent for these Intel GPUs. I ran a basic test on the game Afterimage, and with OpenGL, it was about 30% better. However, my CPU is somewhat outdated (Core i5 11400), and its iGPU is pretty weak, but it would be an interesting comparison nonetheless.
