    I cant even get my pal's DG2 to work with vaapi at all, running into some bugs with any vaapi operation

    What Intel has done very well here is to access the legacy Media SDK through oneVPL, so there is one API to target old and new hardware.

    For distributions this allows to just switch to oneVPL, without leaving users of old hardware behind.

The oneVPL Video Processing Library supports CPU-based execution as well as native Intel GPU acceleration for their latest Gen12/Xe hardware with a focus on Arc Graphics / DG2 hardware, targeting the Intel Media SDK for their older GPUs, and can be adapted for other possible back-ends...
