Phoronix: Intel AMX Patches For The Kernel Posted A 10th Time, But To Miss Out On Linux 5.15

Going back to June of last year there has been work on Intel bringing up Advanced Matrix Extension (AMX) that will debut with next-gen Xeon "Sapphire Rapids" processors as a new programming paradigm. Over the past year they have published patches for the Linux kernel and open-source toolchains with GCC and LLVM Clang. One year later, the AMX kernel patches are up to their tenth revision but will miss out on the imminent Linux 5.15 merge window...

Is this for AI or something? While that is cool, most of the heavy processing things have already moved to dedicated chips...

It *is* a dedicated AI accelerator specifically targeting 16-bit matrix operations. As for "most of it moved to dedicated chips" that's flatly incorrect. General purpose CPUs do a whole lot of AI in the real world because of their flexibility and because it's a whole lot easier to program for them vs. some boutique startup chip.

This is a major move forward over what was already strong AI support with AVX-512 VNNI instructions.
