    In these tests using Firefox 86 and Chrome 89 as the latest stable versions, Firefox tended to have a larger difference than Google's browser. Chrome in general tends to perform much better on Linux even with mitigations than Firefox.
    Mitigations against Spectre are enabled mostly in software, not in the kernel, which makes me believe that Firefox has deeper mitigations enabled by default vs. Google Chrome which was shown by Google itself to be vulnerable against Spectre.

    It would be nice to see Zen 2/3, Tiger Lake and Comet Lake results as well.

      Agree. I'd be highly interested about finding out how mitigations affect different CPUs.

        And these are despite the link in the article to Zen3 tests... Tiger Lake was also tested, just not linked.

          Results in a vacuum are interesting only to few people, that's why having other CPUs tested and presented in graphs allow to process information more easily. Have a good day!

            Zen is less affected simply because it needs fewer mitigations, as the most egregious vulnerabilities are on the Intel side. I don't think this is news at this point.

              It would be well to remember that just because mitigations are in hardware instead of software doesn't mean there is no performance impact. It does mean that we have no way to see what the impact vs. a Rocket Lake CPU in a world where Meltdown and Spectre were never discovered is.

                That's an excellent point. Setting "mitigations=off" in the kernel does not disable any hardware mitigations baked into the silicon.
