Phoronix: Intel FSGSBASE Linux Support Revived For A Performance Boost On Intel/AMD Processors

Earlier this month I reported that Linux developers were reviving work on the Intel FSGSBASE patches as a performance helper going back to Ivy Bridge CPUs but for which past patch series never got over the finish line for mainlining. On Thursday a new version of the FSGSBASE patches were sent out...

Huh. I wouldn't mind trying them (and may pull a branch, just to see) but didn't Linus rage on Intel's previous attempts at these (with almost his usual, pre-neutering fire) because of how badly they were implemented?

Probably not without introducing a whole slew of nice side effects (security).

Trying them out now, so far, so good. Is there any test-case that could be used to test them for breakage? FWIW VMWare is running just fine.

I run "mitigations=off" as a matter of course, so I can't exactly say I can feel any seat-of-the-pants speed improvements, but I haven't run my usual daily workloads yet.
